The Journey Continues

In February 2015 the North Carolina STEM Alliance was created after we received a federal grant of 1.5 million dollars from the National Science Foundation (NSF) with program support from Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP). The goal of our program was to increase the number of underrepresented minorities who pursued a four- year degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) field.

Three and a half years later we can happily report that we have moved on to phase II of our work, as we received renewal from NSF in July, and more importantly, we can begin speaking to the lives we have impacted with our programming over the last several years.

The photo below represents Central Piedmont Community College’s (CPCC) first group of NC STEM Alliance Fellows. Some in this photo only participated in the program for a few weeks before life circumstances took them in different directions, some transferred to a 4-year university to continue their pursuit of a bachelor degree, and there are even a handful of others who are still members of the alliance to this day, diligently plucking away at their AS/AE courses one or two at a time as they continue to work, take care of  family full-time, etc. Each journey is unique and each comes with a different set of challenges.

The NC STEM Alliance exists to help students overcome some of the obstacles that may prevent them from receiving a STEM degree, whether they be academic in nature, financial, or personal. Across our three schools (Central Piedmont Community College, Guildford Technical Community College, and in phase I Davidson County Community College, but today we have Forsyth Technical Community College on board as our new partner) we have positively impacted 100’s of students. Our focus for the second phase of our project is to increase that number significantly. Undergraduate research opportunities, weekly workshops, academic and career mentoring, and math coaching are just a few examples of the activities the NC STEM Alliance implements to help students successfully navigate their educational journeys.

We have exciting things planned for this next iteration and we hope you will join us!
